Janet Williams sent me a highly amusing cartoon drawn by herself that the New Yorker did not deign to publish: The deKoonings Get Dressed.
She drew it back when "MoMA was about to reopen at their renovated Manhattan site, and everyone was wondering where some of the more famous purchases were going to be hung, like Woman #1 by Willem deKooning."
And yet, as with all good jokes, the laughs still linger despite their topical reference points.
No doubt the editors at that illustrious publication felt that two or three dull and low brow efforts by Roz Chast strewn randomly across the pages of the magazine would be more suitable for their audience.
James Thurber may not be exactly rolling in his grave, but he certainly isn't quaking with mirth either. Anyway, Janet's cartoon:

If Thurber were alive, perhaps he'd have brought Ruskin and Turner back with him. Is Steinberg still alive?
All I see, Stephen, is a big box labeled "Janet_Cartoon" around a smaller box that has a red X in it. Is that it? Very clever. I don't get it.
